A small village with a big heart

The Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust, on behalf of Lydford Primary School, has a fantastic opportunity to purchase some land adjoining their school playing field.

This land offers the school the potential to build a cabin on an existing footprint for use by the school and the community, and also means the school has the potential to expand on their forest school activities. With 5/7th of an acre, there is so much potential.

The DMAT has found some funding for the project, but budgets will not stretch to fund the purchase entirely. Not wanting this one-time opportunity to pass the school by, parents and the community have stepped in to raise the extra money needed for the land.

Lydford Community Group is running the Land Appeal which aims to raise £6000 this year, and residents in the village have rallied together to make this goal achievable. Locals have donated money to the appeal and the Dartmoor Inn and the Castle Inn have offered support for the project. Local musicians and choirs have donated performances and one resident of Long Ridge in Lydford is working with the Land Appeal to open his 30-acre garden to the public on 24th July to raise money for the cause.

The community has really embraced the idea and understands that this land will benefit young families and the whole village for generations, and will create opportunities for the school and locals to work together. The land would enable to school to develop their outdoor education, and ideas are being explored as to how the community could also benefit, such as community orchards and a shared space building.
