Wayne Rooney's Argyle overwhelm Cheltenham in friendly

Perfect Pilgrims produce five-star performance

Pre-season at Plymouth Argyle stepped up a notch with a confident 5-1 demolition of Cheltenham Town on the weekend.

Having spent nine days warm weather training in Spain, the Greens were red hot at Whaddon Road, recovering from an early goal against to lead 3-1 at the break with strikes from Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker and Muhamed Tijani.

Argyle extended their with a second from Tijani and Ryan Hardie emerged from the bench to seal a dominant display.

“We had two of the new lads getting goals and always important for attacking players to hit the back of the net,” said Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney.

“There was some really good attacking play throughout the game. Defensively, at times, we can do a lot better but we’re still working on a lot of stuff. Overall, I’m pleased with the performance and getting the win.”

Argyle starting line-up: 1 Michael Cooper, 3 Nathanael Ogbeta, 6 Dan Scarr, 7 Ibrahim Cissoko, 8 Joe Edwards (capt), 10 Morgan Whittaker, 15 Mustapha Bundu, 18 Darko Gyabi, 20 Adam Randell, 22 Brendan Galloway, 26 Muhamed Tijani. 

Line-up from 60 minutes: 21 Conor Hazard, 2 Bali Mumba, 4 Jordan Houghton, 9 Ryan Hardie, 11 Callum Wright, 17 Lewis Gibson, 24 Saxon Earley, 29 Matty Sorinola, 34 Caleb Roberts, 35 Freddie Issaka, 37 Jack Matthews.
