New chairman for the Okes
Pre-season training has begun in earnest at Okehampton Rugby Club and John Shields will be the man overseeing things from the top, as he takes on the role of chairman at Oaklands Park.
Robert Barkwell has retired as chairman after an incredible 24 years at the helm and Carol Barkwell, on behalf of Robert, was presented with a framed team picture by Club President Jerry Ovens in recognition of his amazing contribution to the Okes.
Mervyn Adams, Godfrey Jarman and Phil Friend have been named Life Members of the club after years of volunteering.
On the pitch, the training regime is ramping up ahead of the start of a new season on September 7. While the men’s first-team suffered relegation to the Regional 2 Tribute SW division, hopes are high for a strong campaign this time around.
Okehampton start their new season with a trip to Topsham and the first home game on September 14 will see the club welcome North Petherton.
