Newbury Blues slip to a disappointing defeat at Ivybridge, getting out muscled by the bigger Ivybridge pack.

A depleted Blues squad make the long journey to Ivybridge and return with a pointless defeat which means they slide into the relegation places.

Blues kick off up the slight slope and the first 9 minutes Blues spend most of the time defending in their own half; eventually they break out and a great phase of play takes them up to the try line only to be prevented from scoring a try when Ivybridge’s 9 kills the ball and earns a yellow card, Blues get a penalty which Richard West kicks 0-3.

Ivybridge restart and again manage to put the Blues defence under sustained pressure; eventually they make the breakthrough when the ref deems Blues have infringed and stopped them from scoring giving Ivybridge a penalty try and Blues a yellow card.

Blues restart, Ivybridge return a long kick into touch, Blues manage to steal the ball after losing the lineout and clear upfield, Ivybridge mount another attack from their own half before kicking deep into Blues half. Alex Millar sets off on one of his runs making good ground before he is halted.

Blues then put through a good grubber kick and a good chase is rewarded when Ivybridge knock on still on their own 22.

Blues manage to hold onto their scrum and Alex Millar sets off and releases Cameron Golby Barr who is through the gap in Ivybridge’s defence to score out wide.

After the restart, Ivybridge mounted another attack from the lineout and win a scrum, from the scrum they spread the ball wide to score wide out on their right to make it 12-8. After a scrum late into the second half, Ivybridge’s pack shove Blues backwards and they score their third try making the score 17-8 just before half-time.

This wasn’t enough for Ivybridge, however. They are straight back into Blues 22 from the restart and win a scrum, their pack produce another big shove and score the bonus point try on half time.

The second-half failed to live up to the thrilling nature of the first, with penalties being the only source of points for the next 40 minutes.
