Bay of Lights
With November upon us now, and Christmas lights and decorations beginning to appear across our town centres, the festive season is fast approaching.
We're getting the Bay ready for the spectacular return of Bay of Lights Illumination Trail, complete with the highly anticipated Ice Rink and Christmas Market.
The response has been phenomenal since the announcement of an actual ice rink coming on to Torquay’s seafront last month, with hundreds already ensuring that they secure a spot to glide across the ice.
Sessions on Christmas Eve are almost fully booked, and our popular weekend sessions are filling up fast.
It's great to see such enthusiasm for this magical new attraction, and even better that locals will have it on their doorstep without needing to commute elsewhere.
The rink will open on Saturday December 6 and run right through to Friday January 2, nestled in Abbey Park under a beautifully lit marquee to ensure skaters can enjoy the festive fun, come rain, shine, or even snow.
Whether you are gliding hand-in-hand with loved ones, showing off your skating skills, taking your child skating for the first time, or just soaking up the seasonal atmosphere, the rink promises a joyous experience for families, friends, and visitors of all ages. Sessions can accommodate up to 80 skaters, and there are plenty of time slots still free throughout December and into January.
Now, I have to confess, my own time on the ice wasn't exactly what you'd call graceful! Let's just say it was one of those moments that was more memorable than masterful, with me falling around in all directions.
But what it lacked in elegance, it more than made up for in laughter. It was one of those moments that will stay with me until my dying day. It just goes to show you don't have to be a Torvill or a Dean to have a great time with friends on the ice.
Who knows, I might even be brave enough for a second attempt this year-but I'll certainly be holding on tightly to one of those friendly snow penguins that help build confidence to help get your "skating legs" going!
As well as timed sessions, we're also offering private hire opportunities - ideal for a Christmas celebration with a difference. If you're looking for a unique Christmas party, or a special seasonal gathering then this may be just what you're looking for; to find out more contact events@torbay.gov.uk.
Of course, the ice rink is just one highlight of this year’s Bay of Lights. Over the coming weeks, you’ll start to see the stunning light installations for the Illumination Trail being carefully put into place.
Stretching for over 1.5 miles along Torquay’s seafront, 19 captivating installations will soon be set up and tested—ready to shine when the Bay of Lights officially switches on Friday November 28.
Magnificent pixel trees featuring dazzling digital light shows will also be installed in both Paignton and Brixham, adding even more sparkle to the Bay of Lights experience.
The Illumination Trail simply wouldn't be possible without the generous support of our local business community. We know how challenging it can be to run a business, which makes their backing even more meaningful. Their continued support not only helps bring festive magic to the Bay but also highlights the vital role these events play in boosting our local economy.
Opening on the same evening as the Illumination Trail, the Torre Abbey Christmas Market will bring festive cheer from Friday November 28 through to Sunday December 21.
With over 30 local stalls brimming with artisan gifts, seasonal treats, and delicious food and drink, it’s the perfect place to find unique presents. Visitors can warm up with a hot drink and enjoy the stunning light projection show illuminating the historic Mansion, either before setting off on, or winding down from, their magical walk along Torquay’s beautifully lit seafront and harbour-side.
There will also be plenty of seasonal cheer in our main town centres, thanks to the funding we have provided to support local town centre partnerships with their Christmas lights. Whether you're out shopping for gifts or catching up with friends, the high streets will sparkle with festive magic, adding to a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all.
Before then, the festive season in the Bay really gets underway with Brixham's Lanterns, Lights & ‘Luminations’ presented by Brixham Town Council, which takes place from Friday November 21 to Saturday November 22. This extremely popular, free community celebration promises an unforgettable start to Christmas.
The event will see Brixham come alive with lantern parades, live music, street entertainment, and a spectacular fireworks display over the harbour. It is always a superb occasion that captures the real spirit of Christmas, bringing residents and visitors together to celebrate the start of the festive season in style.
If you've never been before, I'd really recommend heading down and soaking up the atmosphere. And to make visiting even easier, our festive parking promotion across town centre car parks in Brixham, Paignton and Torquay means you can enjoy seasonal attractions, experiences, and shopping without the stress of your parking running out. Please remember to check signage and individual car park terms and conditions as details may vary by location.
