A fundraising appeal has been launched by Exeter City Football Club Trust to help repair the damage caused by a fire that broke out late on Wednesday night (12 November) at Exeter City Football Club’s St James Park.

The blaze, which started around the St James Road and Well Street corner of the ground, caused extensive damage to key match-day facilities and is now expected to cost up to £100,000 to put right.

More than five fire crews from Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service attended just after 10pm, using hose-reel jets, breathing apparatus, ventilation fans and thermal imaging cameras to bring the fire under control.

Crews managed to contain the blaze within roughly two hours, preventing further spread and avoiding what could have been a far more serious incident. No injuries were reported and the incident was confirmed “accidental”.

The fire damaged the building that houses the stadium’s control room and medical room, both essential for match-day operations.

Around 60 per cent of the control room building has been destroyed, including electrical intake cupboards, wiring and equipment. The adjacent Adam Stansfield Stand also suffered fire and smoke damage.

Local residents have voiced strong support for the club. Sarah Mitchell, who lives near St James Road, said: “The fire was frightening to see but the response from firefighters and the community was incredible. St James Park is a huge part of this area, and people want to help however they can.”

The club has begun a full assessment of the repair work required, but with insurance decisions still pending, Exeter City is facing immediate short-term costs. To bridge the gap, the Exeter City Supporters’ Trust has launched a fundraiser with an initial target of £100,000.

Funds raised will go directly towards the removal and replacement of damaged buildings and equipment needed to run matches safely. Any surplus money will be ring-fenced for future stadium infrastructure improvements.

All donations will be held in a dedicated Supporters’ Trust bank account. The Trust added that the target may be adjusted as repair quotes come in, and a further decision will be made once the insurance outcome is known.

The club and Trust say they have been “hugely grateful” for the offers of help received from supporters and local businesses since the fire. Anyone with expertise who can assist with repairs or technical work has been encouraged to get in touch.
