Year 6 pupils from Whipton Barton Federation have taken part in a day of hands-on learning at Coldharbour Mill in Uffculme as part of their history studies on the Industrial Revolution.
During the visit, pupils joined a workshop that introduced them to the working lives of Victorian child labourers.
The session included a drama activity in which children acted out typical mill tasks, giving them an insight into the long hours and difficult conditions faced by young workers in the 19th century.
The group also toured the mill to see how fleece is processed into yarn. Coldharbour Mill, which has been in continuous operation since 1797, still houses working machinery, steam engines and one of the UK’s largest functioning 18th-century waterwheels.

Whipton Barton Federation, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, places strong emphasis on exploring history in engaging and meaningful ways.
From early years upwards, pupils study a wide range of British and world history, including the Romans and Anglo-Saxons to Ancient Greece, the Shang Dynasty and the Kingdom of Benin.
Executive Headteacher Louise Moretta said the visit sparked huge enthusiasm among the pupils. “This was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 6 children to experience history in such a memorable way,” she said.
“The workshop and mill tour gave them a real understanding of the challenges faced by Victorian mill workers and inspired thoughtful questions and lively discussion throughout the day.”
Ted Wragg Trust CEO Moira Marder said trips like this are vital in helping children connect with the past. “It’s wonderful to see our pupils engaging so enthusiastically with history outside the classroom,” she said.
“Visits like this bring learning to life, spark curiosity and help young people connect the past to the world we live in today.”
