Exeter could see a touch of wintry weather this week as temperatures drop below freezing and a band of Arctic air moves south across the UK, according to the Met Office.

While the south west is expected to avoid the worst of the conditions, a yellow warning for snow and ice is in place from 12pm Wednesday (19 November) through to 11.59pm Thursday (20 November), covering parts of Devon and Cornwall.

A Met Office spokesperson told Exeter Today: “Things are certainly set to turn wintry over the coming few days, with snow and ice a risk for many areas, although the southwest is likely going to be less affected than those areas further north.”

“This is because the weather is coming in from a northerly direction, so Scotland, Northern Ireland and the east coast will see the most severe weather.”

Even so, Exeter residents should expect a sharp drop in temperatures. “It will turn colder in the southwest, with sub-freezing temperatures expected by night this week, with Thursday likely to be the coldest,” the spokesperson said.

Snowfall is possible across parts of Devon as wintry showers drift in through the Irish Sea on Wednesday and Thursday.

Some areas may not see any snow at all, but higher ground could receive between 2 and 5cm.

The Met Office noted: “Whilst not everywhere will get dusting, hills and higher ground could see up to 2–5cm of snowfall during this period.”

Dartmoor is the most likely location for settling snow, though brief flurries elsewhere in the county cannot be ruled out.

The cold snap will begin to ease as the weekend approaches, with milder conditions expected to return.

Residents are advised to take extra care on untreated roads and pavements during the colder nights and early mornings as ice becomes more likely.
