North Devon and Torridge are bracing for the arrival of Storm Bram overnight and into tomorrow (Tuesday, December 9) with a mix of yellow and amber weather warnings issued for the county.

The Met Office has upgraded its earlier weather for the Dartmoor area to amber, which means there is the potential for floodwater and damage to homes and businesses, while the rest of Devon is under a yellow warning.

The yellow warning for the North Devon area is in force from 6pm today until 2pm tomorrow, with heavy rain forecast and winds of up to 50mph.

Devon County Council has warned motorists and commuters to take extra care when driving tomorrow morning, with the potential for flooding in many areas.

With the ground already saturated, there is a strong chance of surface water on many local roads as well as the possibility of fallen trees or branches.

Councillor Dan Thomas, Devon County Council cabinet member for highways, said: “Although strong wind gusts of around 50mph are expected through until tomorrow, the biggest concern is more rainfall on top of what we’ve already had over the last couple of days.

“There’s likely to be a lot of surface water because of the sheer volume of rain that’s forecast. I can’t emphasise strongly enough but please take extra care.

“Allow extra time for your journey, drive according to the conditions, and please don’t attempt to drive through floodwater. You could put yourself and others at risk.”
