A supermarket chain has submitted a formal planning application for a new store in North Devon following a public consultation.
Lidl GB is seeking permission from North Devon Council to build the outlet on land off Tinever Road, aimed at serving residents in Chivenor and Braunton.
The retailer said 92 per cent of the 1,300 people who responded to its consultation were in favour of the move. Many residents claimed the store would reduce the need to travel into Barnstaple for food shopping and would help cut local traffic.
A key theme of the consultation was the potential impact on local roads. Residents supporting the plans suggested that a nearby store would help reduce congestion on the busy A361 by removing the necessity for "out-of-area" shopping trips.
If approved, the development would include:
A new supermarket with an in-store bakery.
A 117-space customer car park and two rapid electric vehicle charging bays.
The relocation of an existing car park to provide 35 long-stay spaces.
Pedestrian access to nearby bus stops.
The company stated that the project would create up to 40 new jobs, with entry-level pay starting at £13.45 an hour.
Suzannah Clemo, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, described the submission as an "important milestone" for the community.
"The store would improve shopping choice, provide access to affordable products, and create new local jobs," she said.
"Our public consultation demonstrated significant community support, and we are grateful to everyone who took the time to respond."
The final decision now rests with North Devon Council planners. The application can be viewed on the council's planning portal under reference 81418.
