Major overnight road closures planned on key route into Exeter

Drivers in Exeter are being advised to plan ahead as overnight closures are scheduled on the A377 at Cowley Bridge for resurfacing works next month.

Devon County Council has confirmed that the stretch of the A377 from the junction with St Andrews Road to Cowley Bridge will be closed on weeknights between 8pm and 6am from Tuesday 10 March until Tuesday 24 March.

The road will remain fully open during daytime hours.

The works affect one of the main routes into Exeter from mid and north Devon, as well as a key link to the A396 Stoke Road and surrounding residential areas.

During the first phase of the scheme, which is expected to last around a week, the overnight closure will apply between St Andrews Road and Cowley Bridge.

However, Cowley Bridge roundabout itself will remain open, operating under temporary traffic lights. This arrangement will allow continued access to the A396 Stoke Road and Wrefords Drive, although motorists have been warned to expect possible delays and to allow additional time for journeys.

In the second week of works, overnight closures between St Andrews Road and Cowley Bridge will continue from 8pm to 6am. In addition, Cowley Bridge roundabout will be closed overnight between 10pm and 6am.

The council has said that the schedule may change depending on weather conditions, as resurfacing works are weather dependent. Variable Message Signs in the area will display up-to-date information, including specific dates for the roundabout closures.

Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times throughout the project.

Cowley Bridge is a key gateway into Exeter and frequently experiences high traffic volumes during peak hours. While the works are limited to overnight periods to reduce disruption, drivers using the A377 corridor are being encouraged to check signage and plan alternative routes where necessary during the two-week programme.
