Exeter City outclassed as Bolton Wanderers run riot at St James Park

Exeter City endured a bruising afternoon at St James Park as promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers swept to a comprehensive 5–1 victory in League One.

The Grecians struggled to contain a rampant Bolton side, who dominated possession and territory from the opening whistle and ultimately ran out emphatic winners, leaving City with plenty to reflect upon.

Exeter fell behind midway through the first half when Sam Dalby slid in to convert Johnny Kenny’s low cross, following sustained pressure from the visitors. Dalby might have doubled the advantage shortly afterwards, but dragged his effort wide after breaking clear.

City were indebted to goalkeeper Joe Whitworth early in the second half, producing an outstanding reflex save to deny Dalby once again. However, the pressure eventually told just before the hour mark as Kenny rose unchallenged to head home Josh Sheehan’s corner, doubling Bolton’s lead.

The Grecians briefly threatened a comeback when Jayden Wareham nodded in from close range after Jack Bonham could only parry Ryan Rydel’s well-struck free-kick, giving the home supporters a glimmer of hope.

But that optimism was short-lived. Within minutes, Thierry Gale restored Bolton’s two-goal cushion with a stunning strike from 20 yards into the top corner, before substitute Ibrahim Cissoko added a fourth, his effort deflecting in off the far post.

Any remaining resistance evaporated in stoppage time when Exeter failed to clear a late free-kick, allowing George Johnston to lash home from close range and complete a miserable afternoon for the Devon side.
