Buckfast Abbey asks for privacy over Ann Widdecombe funeral plans

The monastery on the edge of Dartmoor has issued a fresh update on funeral arrangements for Ann Widdecombe, saying it is working closely with her family and asking for privacy while plans are finalised
Buckfast Abbey has said it is continuing to work with the family of Ann Widdecombe on funeral arrangements and has asked for privacy while plans are being made.
In a statement issued on Friday, July 24, Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community said they were keeping the former MP's family and loved ones in their prayers.
The statement said: "Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community of Buckfast continue to hold Ann Widdecombe, her family and loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time.
"We are working closely with the family regarding funeral arrangements and will provide further information in due course, when appropriate.
“We respectfully ask that the family's privacy is honoured as they make these arrangements."
Buckfast monks also thanked those who had sent messages of sympathy following Ms Widdecombe's death.
The statement added: "Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community are grateful for the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received."
Earlier this week, the abbey described Ms Widdecombe as "a woman of profound faith" who regularly worshipped there, attending Sunday Solemn Mass as well as Holy Week and Easter services.
It said many members of the congregation knew her as "a kind and warm character" and remembered her as a dedicated public servant whose Roman Catholic faith shaped her public life.
No further details of the funeral have been announced, with the abbey saying that more information would be released "in due course, when appropriate."
Ms Widdecombe, 78, was a former Conservative minister and MP before later serving as a Member of the European Parliament.
She lived in Haytor, on Dartmoor and was a regular worshipper at Buckfast Abbey.
Ann died earlier this month, and a man has been charged with her murder.
