Dartmoor inn goes viral as creators explore one of 'Britain’s strangest pubs'
Those Pub Guys have taken their search for the UK’s best pub to The Highwayman Inn near Okehampton, showcasing its distinctive interiors and eerie reputation in a new viral video
A Dartmoor pub known for its unusual interiors and ghost stories has caught the attention of social media food and drink creators Those Pub Guys, whose video of the venue has attracted thousands of likes and shares.
The creators visited The Highwayman Inn in Sourton, near Okehampton, to explore what they described as a contender for Britain’s strangest pub.
Opening the video with the line, “You’re about to see inside what could be the strangest pub in Britain”, the pair take viewers inside the distinctive inn, which has been transformed over several decades into a maze of unusual rooms, curiosities and themed interiors.
Posted to TikTok on Wednesday (14 October), the video had attracted more than 8,450 likes, comments, saves and shares at the time of writing.
The creators also shared footage on Instagram, where their account has around 135,000 followers, and describes their mission as being “on the hunt for the UK’s best pub”.
A pub with an unusual history
The Highwayman Inn is no ordinary country pub, with the building dating back to the 13th century, and was once a coaching house and farm.
Buster and Rita Jones took over the inn in 1958 and began transforming it into the unusual attraction visitors see today.
The business remains family-run, with their daughter Sally and her husband Bruce continuing the work.
Among the pub’s features are an entrance incorporating an old stagecoach and a bar with a collection of unusual objects and hidden corners.
The inn’s own website describes it as “the most unusual pub in Britain”.
Those Pub Guys highlighted the pub’s distinctive appearance in their Instagram post, writing: “Using local stone, wood and a whole lot of imagination they made sure the pub was one you won't forget in a hurry.”
They ended their video by calling it “one of the strangest pubs we’ve ever visited”.
Ghost stories add to the mystery
The Highwayman Inn is also associated with local ghost stories, with visitors having reported unexplained sounds and sightings over the years.
In a separate social media post, Those Pub Guys described it as a possible contender for the “Most Haunted Pub in Britain”.
Their post referred to reports of ghostly figures, unexplained footsteps and a feeling of being watched in empty rooms.
The pub’s own history also recounts tales of alleged sightings, including a figure dressed in green with a feather in his hat.
