Free Ashburton event explores the realities of rural poverty

A public discussion exploring the challenges of rural poverty in Devon is coming to Ashburton next month, as part of a national festival celebrating social research.
Citizens Advice Devon and the University of Plymouth are inviting members of the public to take part in a free event at Ashburton Town Hall on Wednesday, November 4, examining the issues facing people living in rural communities.
The event is part of the Festival of Social Science, which aims to bring research out of universities and into the wider community, encouraging people to discuss issues that affect everyday life. Participants will be invited to join facilitated discussions exploring the realities of rural poverty, including transport difficulties, social isolation, a shortage of affordable housing, low wages and access to essential services.
The conversations will use realistic scenarios based on people who have approached Citizens Advice for help, giving participants an opportunity to consider the challenges facing rural residents and how they might be addressed.
Janie Moor, chief executive of Citizens Advice South Hams, said: “We are excited to be part of this festival with the University of Plymouth and to encourage members of the public to have constructive conversations about how we can help overcome poverty in rural areas like Devon.”
No specialist knowledge is needed to take part, and organisers hope to hear a wide range of perspectives from people with an interest in their local communities.
Janie added: “You don’t have to be an expert in any of these subjects to take part and the conclusions from the day will be fed into our national Citizens Advice rural policy group and our Devon Rural Energy Poverty Summit next year.”
The Festival of Social Science, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, is celebrating its 25th year. This autumn's programme features more than 300 events across the country, with the theme Money, Finance and the Cost of Living.
Citizens Advice provides free, independent and confidential advice to members of the public, helping people navigate issues including benefits, housing, debt, employment and energy costs.
