In the wake of recent reports citing a decline in listeners for BBC Radio Devon, former presenters Pippa Quelch and David Fitzgerald, known as ‘Fitz,’ have opened up about life after the BBC.

Both Pippa and Fitz faced redundancy after dedicating numerous years to the station, but have since made interesting transitions to their careers.

Reflecting on his post-BBC endeavours, Fitz shared insights into his bustling schedule, and emphasised the plethora of opportunities beyond traditional radio.

"It's been actually very busy. It's been absolutely ridiculously busy. Which is really encouraging that there is life after the BBC, if not in it," Fitz remarked.

Expanding on his newfound ventures, Fitz detailed his involvement in podcasting, including Fitz in The Community with Clear Sky Publishing and a recently launched podcast titled Back on the Ball, featuring lively discussions with local football personalities including ex Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur player, Colin Lee and ex Exeter City player, Dean Edwards.

Despite his admitted lack of football expertise, Fitz has found joy in the camaraderie and humour of his podcasting work.

"I know nothing about football and it comes across quite nicely. So it's a laugh, that's the main thing," he chuckled.

In addition to his podcasting pursuits, Fitz remains deeply committed to championing dementia and military charities and has recognised the urgent need for enhanced support for veterans grappling with dementia.

"I'm actually trying to get both together at the moment because there does seem to be an absence of care for veterans with dementia," he said.

As the president of the Dartmoor Royal British Legion, Fitz has continued to honour military personnel through initiatives such as the Festival of Remembrance.

Despite the allure of radio and its listeners, Fitz has remained resolute in his decision to explore new avenues.

"Again, it's just moved on. So I'm not going back and I do encourage people to listen to local radio, otherwise, you will lose," he said.

Pippa Quelch, another well-known figure from BBC Radio Devon, embarked on a transformative journey following her departure from the station.

With nearly 30 years of dedicated service, Pippa bid farewell to the airwaves after taking voluntary redundancy in September 2023, but has found fulfilment in her new role as the PR and campaigns manager at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary.

Reflecting on her decision, Pippa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pursue her passion for animals and philanthropy.

She said: "It’s my dream job. I love all animals and was drawn to the idea of working with a highly respected charity that truly makes a difference in the South West.”

Immersing herself in the sanctuary's mission, Pippa highlighted the profound impact of Equine Assisted Learning sessions, which foster healing and transformation among participants.

"Each day is humbling, seeing the passion, skill and care that every member of this team applies to their work," she said.

Despite her departure from BBC local radio, Pippa has remained optimistic about future projects involving her beloved microphone. "Although I’ve left BBC local radio, I’m hoping many more projects involving a microphone will follow," she said.
