Dartmoor Zoo has announced the successful completion of its search for a new CEO, with the appointment of Dr David Gibson.

The establishment of the CEO role follows Zoo Founder Ben Mee's decision to step back from operational responsibilities, allowing him to focus on other projects while remaining an integral part of the organisation.

Dr Gibson's arrival comes in the wake of Coral Jonas's departure as Chief Operating Officer in December 2023.

Bringing a wealth of experience to the table, Dr Gibson has previously served as the Assistant Chief Executive at The Deep, Executive Director of Fota Wildlife Park, and Managing Director of the National Marine Aquarium.

His passion for animals and extensive background in the field began with a degree in Zoology from The University of Glasgow.

Benjamin James, Chairperson of Dartmoor Zoological Society, has expressed delight at Dr Gibson's appointment, highlighting its significance in the zoo's development.

“We are delighted to have someone of David's calibre joining as CEO of Dartmoor Zoological Society. David's appointment marks a significant milestone in our development.”

James, along with the trustees, all eagerly anticipate collaborating with Dr Gibson to further enhance infrastructure and develop the zoo's collection plan.

Dr Gibson's track record includes notable achievements in charitable organisations, notably his instrumental role in establishing The Deep in Hull, a renowned charitable aquarium backed by £54 million in Millennium funding.

His experience chairing an EAZA/EUAC Endangered Species Programme and qualifying as a Secretary of State Zoo Inspector through DEFRA is also part of the reason why he has been appointed to this role.

In his remarks, Dr. David Gibson conveyed his excitement about assuming leadership at Dartmoor Zoo: “I am delighted and excited to take over the reins at Dartmoor Zoo."

"I don’t doubt that there will be many challenges ahead, but I have every confidence that with the support of the trustees and staff of the charity we can help this fantastic Zoo achieve its full potential.”
