Previous protest on Dartmoor
Right to Roam has made the difficult decision to postpone their planned trespass to the ‘Forbidden Island’ at Vixen Tor in Dartmoor this Saturday (February 24) .
The decision comes amidst extremely sodden ground conditions following heavy rain, with a severe weather warning exacerbating the situation.
The tor lies between Tavistock and Princetown on Dartmoor.
The organisation has been campaigning to bring a Right to Roam Act to England so that millions more people can have easy access to open space, and the physical, mental and spiritual health benefits that it brings.
In recent days, the upcoming trespass has garnered significant media attention following the release of their access islands story, with coverage in major outlets such as the BBC, Guardian, Times, Independent, Telegraph, Express, and Mirror.
Additionally, their cause gained traction with appearances on prominent programs like the Today programme, Sky News, and LBC, and will be introduced to the House of Lords on Wednesday.
While thrilled by the enthusiasm and support for their cause, Right to Roam expressed concern over the potential damage to waterlogged ground and safety issues posed by the challenging conditions.
A spokesperson stated, “Our campaign is all about creating a culture of responsible access, and when the situation demands it, it's right to put the land before ourselves.”
Refunds will be issued to those who paid for coach deposits, and alternative compensation options are being explored for individuals unable to refund train tickets.
Right to Roam encouraged supporters to engage in exploring access islands near them and sharing their experiences on social media.
Despite the setback, Right to Roam remains committed to their mission and hinted at future events, including one in Cirencester next month.
