The Okehampton hotel has closed permanently
Lewtrenchard Manor, a historic hotel near Okehampton, has closed its doors permanently, marking the end of an era for the establishment.
Dating back to 1626, the manor's rich history saw it transformed into a hotel in 1949, becoming a destination for travellers seeking a taste of old-world charm.
The Murray family, who first acquired the lease in 1988, recently announced the closure, citing impossible challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite efforts to sustain operations, including multiple attempts to sell the lease, the family ultimately found themselves with no viable alternatives.
In a statement, the Murray family expressed their deep regret over the closure, acknowledging the impact on their loyal team members and guests who had become part of the Lewtrenchard Manor family.
“It is with a significant amount of regret that we have permanently closed Lewtrenchard Manor," the statement read.
"We made this decision with a heavy heart, but due to difficult trading conditions since Covid and several failed sales of our lease, we had no further options available to us."
The closure leaves the future of the historic property uncertain, as the lease reverts back to the landlords.
The Murray family expressed uncertainty regarding the landlords' plans for the manor, adding to the sense of loss for the community.
"Our thoughts are with all the members of our wonderful and fantastic team who have lost their jobs," the statement continued, "and we wish them all the best for the future, and to so many guests we count as friends, who chose to stay and visit us time and time again."
