Shaldon Wildlife Trust founder honoured with prestigious Zoo Award

Steward Muir

Stewart Muir, founder of Shaldon Wildlife Trust, has been awarded the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) lifetime achievement award at the organisation's recent annual conference. This prestigious accolade celebrates Stewart’s decades-long dedication to wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and his contributions to advancing best practices in zoos and aquariums across Europe. The award is one of the highest honours in the zoo industry, with only a select few recipients each year.

Stewart founded the Shaldon Wildlife Trust in 1979, and it officially became a registered charity in 1985. Situated near the Devon coastline, the Trust has become renowned for its conservation work, focusing particularly on small, endangered species. What started as a small zoo with a mission to educate the public about wildlife conservation has grown into a vital institution, known for its specialised breeding programmes and participation in global conservation efforts.

With over 40 years of experience, ranging from zoo keeper to director, Stewart has been a key figure in shaping the zoo industry. His efforts to improve animal welfare and his commitment to the wellbeing of zoo staff have made him a respected leader within the community. Stewart also served as chair of the EAZA Small Carnivore Taxon Advisory Group for 12 years. One of his most notable achievements is helping to establish the Owston's civet conservation programme, which evolved into Save Vietnam’s Wildlife, now the largest wildlife NGO in Vietnam.

Stewart said: "I couldn’t believe the award was for me. Everything I did during my career was because I enjoyed it, but I am so immensely thankful for the award.”

The award ceremony had a personal touch, with friends and colleagues shouting out words to describe Stewart, including "amazing," "kind," and even "my favourite little carnivore," in a nod to his extensive work with small carnivores. The secretive nature of the award added to the emotional moment when Stewart's achievements were celebrated in front of his peers.

Zak Showell, the current Director of Shaldon Wildlife Trust, praised Muir’s lasting impact on both the Trust and the wider conservation community: "We are thrilled to see Stewart recognised on such a significant platform. His vision and tireless efforts have not only shaped our organisation but have also had a profound impact on the broader conservation community. This award is a testament to his passion and dedication."

Shaldon Wildlife Trust, though one of the UK’s smallest zoos, has punched above its weight in terms of conservation and education. Over the years, it has focused on breeding programmes for endangered species such as the Owston's civet, Madagascan lemurs, and various tamarin species. These efforts have helped ensure the survival of critically endangered animals and raised public awareness about the importance of conservation.

The Trust’s work aligns with Stewart’s lifelong mission to inspire future generations to care for the natural world. As Chair of Trustees, Stewart continues to guide the Trust, ensuring that its programmes and partnerships remain at the forefront of global conservation efforts.

Stewart Muir’s recognition with the EAZA lifetime achievement award cements his legacy as a pioneer in conservation and animal welfare, and his work will continue to influence the zoo community for years to come.
