Each bauble features a message of hope
Exeter-based charity Julian House has unveiled a festive Christmas tree in Princesshay, adorned with handmade baubles crafted by students from Petroc’s Tiverton campus. Each bauble features a "message of hope" contributed by Julian House clients, staff, members of the public, and Exeter City Council's housing team, symbolising compassion and community spirit.
The tree is part of Julian House’s annual Christmas Appeal, launched against the backdrop of a 32% rise in rough sleeping across Devon in 2023. With homelessness on the rise and the charity’s funding under threat, Julian House is urging the public to support their life-changing initiatives this holiday season.
The baubles, designed by Petroc students Harvey Hogan, Harvey Butler, and Connor Pearce under the guidance of lecturer Roger Edgecombe, add a personal and heartfelt touch to the display.
“This Christmas tree is more than just a decoration,” said Grace Dearson, Senior Fundraiser for Julian House. “It’s an opportunity to promote compassion, strength, and community support. The handmade baubles and messages of hope remind us of the impact each of us can have on those in need. We’re very grateful to the students at Petroc for their generous support, and we hope the tree brings comfort and joy to those visiting Princesshay this season.”
The Julian House tree is one of 35 decorated by local charities and displayed in Princesshay, offering visitors a chance to reflect on messages of hope, resilience, and kindness during the festive season.
Julian House’s Senior Fundraiser praised the importance of the public’s involvement: “By supporting our Christmas Appeal, you can help us provide life-changing and life-saving assistance to some of Devon’s most vulnerable people this Christmas and throughout the year.”
Visitors to Princesshay can now view the Julian House Tree of Hope, take a moment to read its inspiring messages, and consider donating to the charity’s Christmas Appeal. Donations will help Julian House continue its vital work providing accommodation, outreach, and support for individuals facing homelessness, poverty, and social isolation.
