Central Devon MP Mel Stride has voiced his strong support for the Conservative Party’s ‘Save the Local’ campaign, which aims to safeguard pubs across Britain, including those in the South West, from rising costs and restrictive policies. The campaign was launched in response to the government’s recent decision to increase business rates, raise National Insurance, and implement a smoking ban in pub gardens.

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said that pubs play a crucial role in local communities, both socially and economically. He warned that additional financial pressures could spell disaster for small, independent pubs already struggling to stay afloat.

“Pubs play a vital role in our community - not only as places to gather and socialise, but as businesses that provide employment and contribute to the local economy,” Mr Stride stated. “By increasing business rates, hiking National Insurance, and introducing a smoking ban in pub gardens, the government is threatening the future of small local pubs everywhere, including here in Central Devon.”

Mr Stride also raised concerns about the financial strain on small businesses, stressing that additional taxes could lead to job losses, reduced opportunities for local businesses, and increased costs for customers.

“The future of our local pubs depends on us all standing together and pushing back against policies that threaten their survival,” he added.

Mr Stride’s advocacy for protecting local pubs is well-established. In 2022, The Drewe Arms in Drewsteignton faced the risk of permanent closure. However, a determined group of local volunteers came together to save the historic establishment, forming a community benefit society that raised enough funds to purchase and renovate the pub.

More than 600 locals contributed to the ambitious refurbishment project, ensuring that The Drewe Arms could continue serving the community. Their efforts stand as a testament to the vital role pubs play in bringing people together and preserving the cultural heritage of small villages across the country.

The ‘Save the Local’ campaign highlights the broader challenges faced by independent pubs and calls for urgent action to prevent further closures. With continued financial pressures and government policies affecting small businesses, campaigners hope to secure long-term support for the pub industry.

As the debate continues, Mr Stride and fellow supporters of the initiative urge both policymakers and the public to rally behind local establishments, ensuring they remain a thriving part of Britain’s social fabric.
