Three new police enquiry offices (PEOs) have opened in Ivybridge, Tavistock, and Liskeard over the past six weeks, enhancing public access to police walk-in services across Devon and Cornwall.

Residents can now visit these stations to report crimes, seek crime prevention advice, and access victim services. The PEOs also provide a place of safety for those at risk, strengthening the connection between communities and law enforcement.

Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Alison Hernandez initially pledged in 2020 to reopen multiple PEOs over five years. Since then, 17 offices have been reopened, with Exeter City’s office set to launch later this year, bringing the total to 26 operational PEOs across Devon and Cornwall.

Previous openings include Newquay in 2020, followed by Tiverton, Newton Abbot, Truro, Falmouth, Penzance, and Bude in 2021-22. More recently, PEOs in Okehampton, Ilfracombe, Honiton, Kingsbridge, Devonport, and Looe opened between October 2023 and February 2024.

PCC Alison Hernandez said: “These front desks are an invaluable asset to our communities. I encourage residents to use them to report crimes, seek guidance, or find help as victims of crime. They also serve as a vital safe space for anyone feeling at risk.”

She praised police enquiry officers for their dedication, noting that since May 2024, over 72,000 people have used PEO services. “This initiative has proven its worth with minimal investment, costing just £2.5 million to date. Making the police more accessible has been one of my proudest achievements, as it reinforces public confidence and strengthens community ties.”

Devon & Cornwall Police Chief Constable James Vaughan QPM said: “Improving public access to the police enhances engagement with our communities, allowing us to respond more effectively to their concerns.”

Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Leaper, who oversees contact services, added: “Our Police Enquiry Officers play a crucial role in supporting control room colleagues by handling non-emergency contact while offering another direct contact point for the community.”
