On May 1, 2025, The Barrel House Ballroom in Totnes will swap its usual lineup of live music for an evening dedicated to renewable energy, bringing together local farmers, business owners, and sustainability experts for an informal discussion over drinks and locally sourced food. This event is an opportunity for local businesses and farmers to explore how they can make smarter, more sustainable choices, helping both their bottom line and the planet.

The event, hosted by Bloom Renewables, will showcase opportunities for businesses and farms to integrate solar, wind, and heat pump technologies—potentially reducing costs, increasing revenue, and strengthening rural economic resilience.

Mark Bloomfield, event organiser and CEO of Bloom Renewables, says that renewable energy isn’t just about environmental benefits; it’s also a sound business strategy.

“There are so many worthwhile initiatives happening with solar and wind,” says Mark. “Energy generated on farmland can do more than just get sold back to the grid - it can also significantly lower energy bills and create higher returns for farmers. This event is a chance to discuss what’s possible, over a pint, in a warm and convivial environment.”

Attendees will have the chance to meet with local solar, wind, and sustainable energy providers to discuss how renewable technology can be integrated into their operations. Businesses represented include:

  • Bloom Renewables (Solar PV & battery storage specialists)
  • Torbay Renewables
  • The Apricot Centre (Sustainable farming and well-being initiatives)
  • Naturesave Insurance (Eco-friendly business insurance)

With energy prices fluctuating and climate concerns growing, many farmers and business owners are looking for alternative ways to increase energy security and generate income. Recent years have seen a surge in solar and wind adoption, with the UK government offering incentives for renewable installations, including zero VAT-rated solutions and ethical financing options.

Renewable energy is particularly beneficial for rural communities, where reliance on fossil fuels can be costly and inefficient. By harnessing on-site energy production, farms and businesses can reduce operational costs and create long-term economic stability.

The event will not be just about business; it will also include a bar, free locally farmed food, and guest DJs providing a relaxed atmosphere for networking and discussion. The goal is to create an open and engaging space for attendees to learn how renewable energy can fit into their business models while enjoying an evening in one of Totnes’ most iconic venues.
