Businesses across Devon and Cornwall are being urged to step up their cyber security measures following a surge in cyber attacks targeting major UK retailers.
Devon and Cornwall Police issued the warning after the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) raised the alert level following recent incidents.
The force is encouraging all businesses, charities and other organisations in the region to take immediate action to protect themselves from potential threats.
In a statement, police recommended reviewing password reset procedures and introducing internal codewords or identity checks for any staff requesting changes to login credentials. Organisations are also being advised to monitor for unusual login activity, such as attempts at odd times or from unfamiliar locations, and to reinforce awareness among staff of social engineering tactics, which can be used to trick people into revealing sensitive information.
A spokesperson for the force said: “This is a timely reminder to encourage all businesses, charities and other organisations in Devon and Cornwall to consider signing up to the South West’s Cyber Resilience Centre.”
Further official advice is available on the NCSC website at ncsc.gov.uk
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the vulnerability of online systems, particularly as criminals increasingly target employees through impersonation and deception to gain access to internal systems.
Organisations can find more information and support by visiting the South West Cyber Resilience Centre, which offers free guidance and tools to improve digital security.
