South Devon Railway has announced a photography competition as part of a national celebration marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway.

The initiative, titled A Story of South Devon Railway, invites the public to submit images that capture the essence of the heritage line, from its volunteers and passengers to the landscapes shaped by its tracks.

The competition is part of Railway 200, a UK-wide campaign commemorating two centuries of railway innovation.

Organisers say they are looking for photographs that tell the story of the railway’s connection to people and place.

Shortlisted entries will be displayed at Buckfastleigh Station in an open-air exhibition this summer, giving visitors a chance to experience the railway’s history through the lens of its community.

The competition is open to anyone with an interest in photography, railways or local heritage. Submissions must be sent digitally through the South Devon Railway website by 12 noon on Friday 20 June.

Images should be submitted at full size and 300dpi resolution.

The overall winner will receive a Gold Steam Drive a Train Experience Package, worth £645, which includes the chance to take the controls of a steam locomotive.

South Devon Railway says the competition is about more than just marking a milestone, it’s a way to celebrate the personal stories that keep heritage railways alive.

Images submitted may be used in future promotional materials, with credit given where appropriate.

Further details, including full terms and conditions, are available at wwwsouthdevonrailway.co.uk.
