Communities across Devon are set to see major improvements in transport connectivity following a Government announcement confirming funding for two new rail stations and vital road upgrades across the region.
As part of a wider £92 billion national infrastructure package, the Department for Transport has approved the development of two new railway stations between Exeter and Taunton. These stations will serve Cullompton and Wellington, improving links across Devon and Somerset and unlocking new opportunities for local jobs and housing growth.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said:
“Transport is the backbone of our economy, which is why we are giving them the record funding boost they need, putting taxpayer’s money where it matters most and making everyday journeys easier.
“With over £92 billion investment, we’re delivering the schemes that fast-track economic growth and jobs, connect communities, and will help us build 1.5 million new homes, as we deliver our Plan for Change.”
Devon’s road infrastructure is also receiving a substantial boost. The Government has confirmed it is backing the A382 Drumbridges to Newton Abbot scheme, a key corridor connecting South Devon communities and easing congestion.
This project will include:
Highway realignment and widening
Upgrades to four junctions, including two new roundabouts
A new link road
Pedestrian and cycle paths, supporting active travel
These works will ease thousands of daily commutes and improve safety along one of Devon’s busiest routes. The project is among several regional road schemes approved, aimed at supporting local travel and reducing bottlenecks, rather than major motorway development.
In addition, a package of junction improvements in and around Plymouth, including the A374, A386, and A364, will help manage traffic flow and enable faster, safer journeys for commuters and visitors.
Also in the South West, the Government confirmed it is moving forward with the long-awaited reinstatement of rail services between Portishead and Bristol City Centre, closed to passengers for 60 years. This part of the package, while centred on North Somerset and Bristol, signals broader efforts to restore local rail services and improve regional rail networks.
The investments are part of the Government’s Plan for Change, which promises to support 42,000 jobs, enable 1.5 million new homes, and improve connectivity for 50,000 people through transport-led regeneration.
