After nearly two decades at the helm, Kevin Bishop has announced his departure as Chief Executive of Dartmoor National Park Authority, describing the position as his "dream job" and reflecting on a career defined by passion, innovation, and a deep commitment to Dartmoor’s future.

Appointed on 1st, October 2007, Bishop has led the Authority through a period of profound change and progress, shaping national thinking on nature restoration, climate action, access to the outdoors, and collaborative land management. His departure marks the end of an era for one of the UK's most cherished landscapes.

During his tenure, Kevin Bishop spearheaded Dartmoor’s response to the climate and ecological crises, making it the first UK National Park to declare a climate and ecological emergency. Within six months, he introduced a pioneering Climate Action Plan, setting a precedent for other protected landscapes across the country.

Working in close partnership with farmers, Bishop helped develop award-winning projects such as Dartmoor Futures, which recognised farming as vital to the long-term restoration of nature. He also played a key role in defending public rights to backpack camp on Dartmoor’s commons, a high-profile legal issue that captured national attention and reinforced Dartmoor’s significance as a space for public connection with nature.

His philosophy of collaborative leadership has been central to Dartmoor’s success. Bishop fostered lasting partnerships with volunteers, local communities, conservation groups, and policymakers. Under his guidance, the Authority became a vocal and respected advocate for protected landscapes, ensuring Dartmoor's voice was heard at all levels, from local communities to the Supreme Court.

Reflecting on his decision to step down, Kevin said:

“When I was offered the role as Chief Executive for Dartmoor National Park, I called it my dream job – although the responsibility of managing one of the nation’s most prized landscapes means I’ve had the occasional nightmare too!
I feel very honoured and privileged to have worked for Dartmoor National Park. It is a special place and I’ve been lucky to have worked with special people from our passionate staff, volunteers and Members, to the organisations and people who live, work and care for this world-class landscape.
For me, the most rewarding part has been working with others to achieve our common goal: to keep Dartmoor truly unique with the power to inspire everyone.”

Will Dracup, Chair of Dartmoor National Park Authority, praised Bishop’s impact and unwavering commitment:

“We are immensely grateful to Kevin for the vision, energy, commitment and dedication he’s given to Dartmoor throughout his leadership.
His strong values of co-operation, positive partnership and innovative thinking have shaped the Authority, helping it endure a fair share of challenges while ensuring Dartmoor can make the most of every opportunity that comes its way.
From Westminster to the Supreme Court, Kevin gave Dartmoor a stronger voice in the corridors of power, making sure people understand and appreciate why National Parks were created, why they matter and what needs to happen to ensure their future.
His unswerving commitment to the purposes and duty of our wonderful National Park – and protected landscapes across the UK – will be felt for many years to come.”

Recruitment for the next Chief Executive (National Park Officer) is expected to begin later this year. Kevin Bishop will remain in post until a successor is appointed, ensuring a smooth and stable transition.

Supporting Dartmoor’s Future

As the Authority prepares for this leadership change, it continues to encourage support for its Donate for Dartmoor programme. Contributions of time or money help protect Dartmoor’s wildlife, cultural heritage, and natural beauty for future generations.
