As part of this year’s exhibition at the Museum of Dartmoor Life, ‘A Shroud for Mother Nature – Is Dartmoor Dying?’, funded by The Royal Society, the museum is thrilled to join with their friends at the Dartmoor Preservation Association who will host a pilgrimage across the Moor as part of their Wild Words project.
They will be carrying the felted shroud, a beautiful piece of community artwork, on a 4.5 mile walk on Wednesday, 6th August, highlighting the endangered and even extinct flora and fauna of Dartmoor, many of which decorate the shroud. Starting from the Widecombe-in-the-Moor village green, the group will walk up a long and steep road hill, but after that the route is fairly flat and downhill at the end. You are invited to join and take it in turns to help carry the shroud (it does have handles) on this pilgrimage of hope. You will be rewarded with wonderful views and an increased understanding of what is happening on Dartmoor today.
Widecombe is a great location as there is plenty of parking (cash needed, £2 in one carpark or £2.40 in the other), there are toilets and great cafes and pubs plus interesting shops, church and historical features. People will also be welcome to just show up to see the shroud off or welcome us back hopefully by 12.30pm.
There are limited numbers of free spaces on the walk available, so please book yours online using this link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dartmoor-shroud-pilgrimage-tickets-1479229006779?aff=oddtdtcreator
Please do not book unless you are sure you can attend as you may deny someone else the chance. You are advised to wear walking footwear and trousers as there are ticks and adders around.
Bring waterproofs, sunscreen, drinks and a snack. Gather on the green on Wednesday, 6th August, from 9.30am for a start of 10am sharp. Please check your email before leaving home as the event will be cancelled if the weather is unsuitable.
