Tavistock businessman turns crime writer with high-speed thriller

A race from start to finish

Best known as the voice behind the familiar “Cashier Number Three, please,” Tavistock businessman Terry Green has swapped queue management for crime fiction with the release of his debut thriller, Redline.

The newly published novel, set in the glamorous and dangerous world of high-performance sports cars, is already earning praise as “a race from start to finish”. It is available now at Tavistock’s Book Stop, the Visitor Information Centre, bookshops across the UK, and online.

In a creative partnership with two Tavistock businesses, readers who buy the book at Book Stop on Market Street between now and Christmas will also receive a voucher for a free cappuccino at Taylors, just across the street.

Green, whose voice has summoned an estimated 25 million shoppers each month in banks, shops and post offices worldwide, is enjoying the challenge of a new career direction.

“Many people already know me as ‘Cashier Number Three’ and over the past 20 years or so, around 25 million shoppers each month have heard my voice summoning them from the queue – in banks, shops and post offices worldwide,” said Terry.

“My first foray into writing was a business book, ‘You’re Next’ which focused on customer service and queue management. A reader commented that it read like a thriller and it got me thinking, why not try my hand at fiction?

“My business life has taken some interesting twists and turns, from cars to queues, cellular phones to celebrity chefs, broadcasting to digital marketing, innovation adviser to the DTI to mentor for the Prince’s Trust. So, I set myself the challenge to come up with a twist on the classic detective story – a series of novels set against the background of my career. Oh sure, there would have to be lies, fraud and murder, with some delicious scandal and just a touch of romantic intrigue! And all served up on a bed of gritty business challenges for our hero, Jake Elderfield.”

Redline introduces readers to Jake Elderfield, a management accountant and part-time firefighter whose adventures are informed by Green’s own extensive business experience and lifelong passion for cars.

The book also includes a free short story, “The Velvet Revolutionary”, set in Prague, a city that will feature in Green’s second novel, Dangerous Art, due out early next year. That follow-up thriller delves into the world of art fraud and money laundering and will be set against some of Green’s favourite backdrops, including Burgh Island, Prague, and his adopted hometown of Tavistock.

Green is already drafting ideas for the third book in the Jake Elderfield series, titled Too Many Cooks, which draws on his decade of experience mentoring hospitality businesses.

Redline is the first book published under Green’s own company, Endsleigh Press, supported by publishing consultancy BeRead, whose founders bring decades of “Big Five” publishing experience.

Terry, who moved to Tavistock in 2020, splits his time between writing, business consulting, and mentoring, as well as walking the moors with Gracie, his energetic Jack Russell terrier, whose face now serves as the Endsleigh Press logo.
