Get ready to score big for your community at The Big Tackle 2026

Rowcroft Hospice has announced the return of its much-loved fundraising event, The Big Tackle, which kicks off again on Saturday, 7 March 2026. Promising to be “bigger, better and more fun than ever,” the sponsored walk invites the South Devon community to lace up their boots and make a difference while enjoying a great day out in Torquay.

Registration is now open at thebigtackle.org.uk, with early-bird entry prices set at £17 for adults and £10 for children. Each ticket includes a free event t-shirt, and participants who sign up before 30 November 2025 can take advantage of the discounted rate before prices rise.

The Big Tackle covers an eight-mile route around Torquay’s scenic streets and coastal paths, starting and finishing at Torquay Rugby Club. After crossing the finish line, walkers can relax with a free pint and pasty while watching the England vs Italy Six Nations Rugby match on the big screen.

Rachel Haime, Fundraiser at Rowcroft Hospice, said:

“The Big Tackle is a brilliant day out for friends, family and colleagues. It’s not just about the walk – it’s about having fun, enjoying the scenery, and being part of something really special. Every step you take helps support Rowcroft’s vital care for local patients and their families, so you can have a great day and make a real difference at the same time.”

Last year’s event saw over 1,000 walkers take part, raising an impressive £100,000 – enough to fund more than 3,300 hours of hospice care. Among those taking part was 18-year-old Rupert Stickland from Kingsteignton, who walked in memory of his father, Craig, cared for by Rowcroft before he passed away aged 54.

“It was such a relief when Dad arrived at Rowcroft, and the nurses were fantastic,” said Rupert. “Rowcroft did everything for the family; nothing was too much trouble. I wanted to do The Big Tackle walk to support the hospice. It’s a top charity.”

Many participants take part in memory of loved ones, and organisers say the event offers a valuable opportunity to “walk and talk” – promoting connection and reflection during times of loss.

This year’s event is open to anyone aged eight and over and is proudly sponsored by WBW Solicitors, Torbay Clearance Services, and Bays Brewery.

While entry fees help cover the cost of staging the event, organisers emphasise that the real impact comes from sponsorship and donations. By raising or donating £50 or more, participants can help fund Rowcroft’s end-of-life care for around 2,500 patients and families across South Devon each year.

As demand for hospice care grows amid increasing financial pressures and limited government funding, Rowcroft says community events like The Big Tackle are more important than ever.
