Construction of the new Okehampton Interchange station has made steady progress since work began in January, with the station due to open in 2026.

The £15m project, funded by the Department for Transport, Network Rail and West Devon Borough Council, will improve rail connections on the Dartmoor Line, linking West Devon, Torridge and North Cornwall with Exeter.

Significant work has included shifting 300 metres of track 90cm to allow for a new platform that meets current standards, laying new track and sleepers, and installing drainage systems beneath the railway.

In May, 25 bored piles were driven 12 metres into the ground to support the platform, footbridge and lift.

Network Rail’s Alex Phillips said: “The last six months has seen strong momentum on this important project, with several significant milestones reached. There’s more to come and we’re excited to bring the new station to life in the months ahead.”

Work will continue this autumn with the installation of a footbridge and lift shaft, along with construction of a 200-space car park and the station platform.

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, West Devon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Biodiversity, said: “I’m sure everyone is pleased to see that good progress is being made on site. Some major elements of the scheme will be carried out in the coming months, such as the installation of the footbridge, but everything is already taking shape. The Dartmoor Line is a tremendous success and we’re looking forward to the opening of this new station which will make rail travel more convenient for even more people, reducing traffic congestion and helping reduce our carbon footprint in Devon.”

Councillor Caroline Mott, lead member for planning and built environment, said: “I am delighted with the positive progress that has been made so far. This initiative will significantly enhance the quality of life for our residents. Our commitment to fostering a vibrant and sustainable community remains unwavering and I am confident these developments will bring long-lasting benefits to everyone in West Devon.”

Councillor Neil Jory, lead member for economy, added: “This station is a pivotal moment in our journey towards economic growth and sustainability. By providing an efficient and accessible transport hub we are not only enhancing connectivity within the region but also opening new opportunities for our businesses. The station will serve as an incentive for local development, attracting investment, boosting tourism, and creating jobs. I look forward to the positive impact it will have on our borough and the wider region.”

David Whiteway, Great Western Railway’s Regional Growth Manager, said: “We’re really pleased to see the new Okehampton Interchange beginning to take shape. This will build on the success that the reopening of the Dartmoor Line has already had, better connecting people with jobs, students with education services, and leisure opportunities for all – providing valuable support for the community and local economies.”
