A new circular walking route across South Hams is set to officially launch this September, offering walkers a 100-mile trail through some of Devon’s most diverse landscapes.

The South Hams Way, now fully signed, will open with a ceremony at Borough Park, Totnes, on 14 September at 10.30am, adjacent to the Pavilion Leisure Centre.

The route is divided into 10 sections, covering 101 miles in total, with distances ranging from 7 to 13.4 miles per section.

Walkers will experience a variety of scenery along the trail.

From the rugged wilds of Dartmoor National Park in the north to the gentle valleys, rounded hills, and native forests of the South Devon National Landscape, the route also passes five estuaries: the Yealm, Erme, Avon, Kingsbridge and Salcombe, and Dart.

Major settlements along the way provide access to accommodation, cafes, pubs, and other amenities.

The full route is:

  • Totnes to Buckfastleigh - 7.1m
  • Buckfastleigh to South Brent - 8.9m
  • South Brent to Ivybridge - 7.1m
  • Ivybridge to Noss Mayo - 11.9m
  • Noss Mayo to Mothecombe - 10.3m
  • Wonwell to Hope Cove - 10.1m
  • Hope Cove to Salcombe - 8.1m
  • East Portlemouth to Torcross - 13m
  • Torcross to Dartmouth - 10.7m

Some stretches will follow quiet lanes, while the majority is along established footpaths.

The idea for the South Hams Way emerged from local ramblers’ groups, inspired by trails such as the Franklyn Trail and John Musgrove Trail.

Landowners along the route were informed during the planning process, and the trail has been designed to showcase local attractions, including Buckfast Abbey, while pointing walkers to services and facilities along the way.

Rebecca Smith, MP for South West Devon, praised the new route on social media, saying: “I often find that the best way to explore South West Devon is by foot. That's why I'm excited for the South Hams Way, a spectacular new 100-mile circular walk, to open on 14 September! It includes 50 miles of the South West Coast Path, the wilds of Dartmoor National Park and five estuaries. We’re so lucky to have so many amazing walks on our doorstep. I will definitely be making use of this new walking trail with family and friends!”

The South Hams Way aims to become a walking destination in its own right, offering both residents and visitors the chance to explore the varied landscapes and communities of South Devon on foot.
