A major film production has been spotted on Dartmoor recently, with large set structures appearing near Sharp Tor for Werwulf, a new medieval horror movie directed by Robert Eggers, known for The Witch and The Northman.

Local walker Alan Ford shared photos of the site in the Dartmoor Public Group, showing a large cross-shaped prop and temporary film set compound.

He asked whether anyone knew the name of the cross visible from the site, which locals later identified as Cave Penney Cross.

“The security guard came towards us so we thought we might get a telling off,” Alan said.

“Instead, he just asked us not to walk on the roadway. He said we could have a closer look if we wanted. Apparently, they’re there for three months altogether, for just a few days filming for less than one minute of footage.”

Alan added that much of the visible set was made of plastic materials.

According to information released earlier this year, Werwulf is set in 13th-century England and follows a mysterious creature terrorising a fog-covered countryside.

The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, and is being produced by Working Title Films and Focus Features.

Filming has already taken place at Sky Studios Elstree in Hertfordshire and Bourne Wood in Surrey, with Dartmoor being one of the final UK locations used for exterior scenes.

Reports suggest that the production team will be based on the moor for around three months, using the Sharp Tor site between Widecombe and Postbridge.

The Moorlander recently reported on the recent crime thriller filmed on Dartmoor, All The Devils Are Here, starring Eddie Mardan and Sam Claflin, re-affirming Dartmoor's place as a leading filming spot in the UK for gritty thrillers.

The film is due for release in December 2026, but for now, the activity has brought curiosity, and a few unexpected encounters, to Dartmoor’s rugged landscape.
