Tavistock drivers warned of major A390 and A386 roadworks starting early in the New Year

Residents and businesses in Tavistock are being advised of several upcoming road improvement schemes scheduled for January and February 2026, including overnight resurfacing on Ford Street.

The works, which form part of a wider maintenance programme on both the A390 and A386, will begin after Christmas and continue through to mid-February. 

Devon County Council says the programme will include drainage upgrades, patching, resurfacing and the replacement of high-friction surfacing in key parts of the town.

Drainage work - A390 Callington Road (8-23 January)

The first stage starts on 8 January, with drainage improvements along the A390 Callington Road. This section of work will run until 23 January and will take place during the daytime under temporary traffic lights. The affected area runs from Staple Tor Road down into Ford Street and the upper section of Drakes Villas.

Patching and surfacing - A386 and Dolvin Road (19-31 January)

From 19 to 31 January, extensive patching and high-friction surface replacement will take place overnight on the A386 Plymouth Road, Abbey Place, the lower section of Drake Villas and into Dolvin Road. Works will run from 7pm to 6am each night, with parking suspensions in place throughout.

Ford Street resurfacing - A390 (2-14 February)

The resurfacing of Ford Street and the surrounding A390 section is scheduled between 2 February and 14 February. These works will also run overnight from 7pm to 6am and will cover the same stretch where drainage improvements are being carried out in January.

Devon County Council says that any noisy work, including the removal of the old road surface, will stop by 11pm each night “as close to that time as possible.” Surfacing will continue afterwards, but the road will reopen to traffic by 6am every morning.

Leaflets outlining both the A390 and A386 schemes will be delivered to residents, councillors and local businesses by the end of November. 

The council says discussions with businesses are due to begin shortly, and signs will also be placed around Tavistock ahead of the works.
