Local charities will soon enjoy their biggest public showcase of the year during Newton Abbot’s annual Victorian Evening, taking place on Wednesday, December 3.

The free event will run from 5pm to 8pm and is expected to draw families, visitors, and supporters from across south Devon.

A long-standing Christmas tradition, the event has been part of the town’s seasonal calendar for decades.

However, because of major building and improvement works in Market Square, the event will take place this year in Bank Street, only a short distance away.

Organisers say the new location still allows plenty of space for stalls, visitors, and entertainment.

A wide range of local charities will set up stalls to share information about their work, sell items, and raise much-needed funds.

Many groups rely on the Victorian Evening to meet supporters, talk about their services, and encourage donations before the busy winter period.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy free Santa visits, live entertainment in Golden Lion Square, walkabout performers, and festive music.

The Newton Abbot Museum will run a stall offering free hands-on activities, giving families a chance to explore local history in a fun, relaxed way.

Food vendors in Courtenay Street will provide warm dishes and seasonal treats to help keep the cold away.

Shops and businesses across the town centre plan to stay open late, making it easier for people to browse for Christmas gifts.

St Leonard’s Clock Tower, specially decorated as Santa’s living room, will be open for free, cozy fireside selfies.

Natalie Hicks, Events Co-ordinator for Newton Abbot Town Council, said:

“Charities are at the heart of Victorian Evening with a fantastic opportunity to showcase what it is they do for our community and to raise funds from the products and fun activities they’ll have on offer.”

She added that the council understands the pressure many people are under this year.

“As always, we’re conscious that many families are finding the high cost of living quite a challenge which is why the event is free to attend, just soak up the atmosphere and free entertainment.”

Hicks also reminded residents about the other festive events coming up in December.

“And if you can’t make it on Wednesday, don’t forget that we have our dog-friendly Christmas carol service on Saturday December 6, the Lantern Parade and late night shopping on Wednesday December 10, then the Mayor’s Carol Service on Wednesday December 17.
