A major programme of improvements to sports facilities in Bovey Tracey has been officially opened, delivering new cricket practice nets, an additional tennis court and upgraded infrastructure after almost five years of work

A £200,000 package of improvements to sports facilities in Bovey Tracey has been officially opened following a project that has been years in the making.

Upgrades at The Recreation Ground on Newton Road include two fully enclosed cricket practice nets, a fourth tennis court with netball markings, and improvements to the site's car park.

Central Devon MP Sir Mel Stride officially opened the facilities during a ceremony attended by representatives from the town's sports clubs and the town council.

Led by Bovey Tracey's Cricket and Tennis Clubs, the scheme has taken almost five years to complete.

The additional tennis court is now available on a pay-and-play basis for non-members, alongside use by the club.

Tennis Club chairman Chris Laycock described the project as "a major achievement and a huge investment in grass roots sport for the local community".

Funding came from a range of sources, including the England and Wales Cricket Board, The Tracey Almshouse Trust, Teignbridge District Council, Sport England, crowdfunding efforts and contributions from the clubs themselves.

Cricket Club chair Tina England thanked the volunteers and supporters involved in bringing the project to completion.

She said: "We are grateful to all the volunteers and supporters who have not only worked hard to raise funds but also generously contributed their skills and expertise free of charge, helping to make this significant project affordable."

Speaking at the opening, Sir Mel Stride said the facilities demonstrated what could be achieved through community effort.

"It was an honour to officially open the new cricket nets and tennis court in Bovey," he said.

"These facilities are the result of years of hard work by volunteers, supporters and local organisations working together.

"A great example of community at its best. Young people in particular will benefit for years to come."

Mayor of Bovey Tracey, Councillor Sheila Brooke, said the new facilities would help support participation in sport among young people.

She said: "One of the things I'm most proud of in our town is the way our clubs support children of all ages and abilities.

"These new nets and courts will help even more young people discover a love of sport, enabling them to lead healthier lives."

She added that the project would not have happened without the commitment of local volunteers.

The new cricket practice nets have been dedicated to the memory of Kelly Luscombe, the cricket club's women's captain, who died last year.

Ms England said: "Her inclusive spirit, her dedication to developing every player, regardless of ability, has helped shape and grow our women and girls' cricket, which is one of the fastest growing sections of the cricket club."
