South West Devon MP marks National Fish and Chip Day by backing local venues

To mark National Fish and Chip Day today, South West Devon MP Rebecca Smith visited a Plymstock takeaway to highlight the pressures currently facing independent local businesses
A South West Devon MP has visited the Plymstock Fish and Chip Shop ahead of National Fish and Chip Day, which is marked on the first Friday in June.
Conservative MP Rebbeca Smith met with the local business to discuss the current economic challenges facing independent hospitality venues.
During the visit, chip shop owners Shane and Leanna outlined the operational pressures currently affecting the sector, including rising energy bills, staffing costs, and increased prices for ingredients, packaging, and transport.
The meeting also highlighted the investment made by the owners to complete a recent refurbishment of the shop since taking over management last year.
Ms Smith stated that independent businesses are an important part of the local economy but noted they are currently under significant pressure.
"Businesses like Plymstock Fish and Chip Shop are an important part of our local economy.
“They create jobs, support local suppliers and help keep our communities thriving," Ms Smith said.
"However, they are currently under a lot of pressure, partly due to the political decisions of the government and that is why I will continue to do all I can to be a strong voice in Westminster for them."

Plymstock Fish and Chip Shop’s owners emphasized that navigating the current economic climate has required significant effort to maintain service standards while continuing to invest in their premises.
Owner Shane said: “It was great to welcome Rebecca to the shop and talk about our first year running the business.
"We’re proud of what we’ve achieved since taking over last year, particularly with the refurbishment now complete, but it hasn’t always been easy.
“It’s been a challenging time for hospitality businesses, and we’ve had to work incredibly hard to keep investing in the business while continuing to provide the quality and service our customers expect."
“We are grateful for the support we’ve received from our customers, staff and suppliers. That support has been hugely important to us over the past year."
Leanna’s father, Baniko, previously founded the Lanterns restaurant on Cornwall Street in Plymouth city centre.
