Tavistock Lions Club celebrated its 50th anniversary during Carnival Week, raising more than £6000 for local causes despite facing unpredictable weather disruptions.
This year’s theme, "Golden Moments," marked over four and a half decades of the Lions organising the historic community event, celebrating half a century of the club's presence in the town.
Celebrations began on Saturday 11 July with the Tavi Fringe Festival, bringing crowds into the town centre.
The following day, Sunday 12 July, the annual Fun Day in the Meadows saw large turnouts as families sought shade by the river to escape 25-degree temperatures.
Activities across the day included circus skills, bouncy castles, a craft tent, live music, the Tavi skateathon, and the traditional Duck Race.
However, the high temperatures forced organisers to cancel the traditional Dog Show.
Press Officer Steve Grummitt stated that even under the trees, temperatures remained around 25 degrees, making conditions unsafe for travelling animals.
Discussions are now underway with Ron’s Pets to potentially include the dog show in their upcoming 40th anniversary event.
Mid-week events continued with the Parish Church Concert, featuring the Stannary Brass Band, Blow Zone, and the Levowan Chamber Choir.
The event drew a strong turnout, predominantly from the town's older generation, unaffected by a scheduling clash with England’s football World Cup semi-final against Argentina.
Local sporting competitions also saw high engagement later in the week.
A tense playoff decided the Pétanque tournament at the Plymouth Road courts, while six teams competed in the Traders' Skittles Competition at the Bowling Club.
The King’s Bakery team, "Morning Glory," secured victory in both events.
The week concluded on Sunday 19 July with the main Carnival Procession.
Judging the entries were West Devon Borough Council Mayor and Mayoress Chris and Jan Edmonds, Tavistock Town Mayor and Consort Anne and Paul Johnson, sponsor Sarah Short, and Lions Club President Graham Whalley.
Whitchurch Primary School won "Best in Procession," receiving a perpetual shield and trophy.
Highly Commended trophies went to Horrabridge School, Tavistock Church Schools Federation, Tavistock Musical Theatre Company, Whitchurch Scouts (performing as The Muppets), and the Lions’ Young Ambassadors, who wore cartoon character costumes.
The parade ran smoothly until 3.50pm, when heavy rain began.
Despite the sudden downpour, onlookers donated £1,898 in cash via collection buckets alongside a further £285 via QR codes, bringing the total raised on the day to £2,183.
Mr Grummitt described the undertaking as a "hot and tiring week, but thoroughly enjoyable," adding that the Lions "do it every year".
All profits will be distributed to participating schools, clubs, and charity groups.
