A couple who stopped to help an intoxicated man on the A381 near Marldon were allegedly punched and kicked after offering him a lift, prompting police to seek witnesses and dash-cam footage

Devon & Cornwall Police are appealing for witnesses after a couple were assaulted by a man they had offered a lift to on a road near Marldon last weekend.

The incident happened between 10.45pm and 11.15pm on Saturday, October 17, after the husband and wife spotted an intoxicated man walking along the unlit A381 between Totnes and Newton Abbot.

Concerned for his welfare, the couple offered him a lift.

In a statement issued earlier today, police said the man was initially grateful but later became agitated and aggressive.

The woman, who was driving, was assaulted before she stopped the car on Five Lanes Road in Marldon and asked the man to get out.

He refused and went on to punch and kick both the man and woman, causing injuries, according to police.

The suspect is described as a white man in his mid-30s, between 5ft 10in and 6ft tall, with an average to athletic build, short brown hair and no facial hair.

He was wearing a grey jacket and white shirt and had existing injuries to his face.

A Devon & Cornwall Police statement said: “Officers investigating the incident are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has relevant dash-cam or even CCTV footage from the areas mentioned between 10.45pm and 11.15pm.

”It is believed two vehicles stopped the area of Five Lanes Road and their occupants would have witnessed the incident.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or report it online, quoting reference 50260283877.
