Safer Newton Abbot walking and cycling link opens to improve road safety

The latest phase of the Ogwell Walking and Cycling Link is now open, connecting Bakers Park and Beverley Way. Although relatively short, the new route is expected to improve safety and make everyday journeys easier for residents
A new path helping walkers and cyclists avoid a narrow main road in Newton Abbot will be a boon for road safety, according to local councillors.
The second phase of the Ogwell Walking and Cycling Link has now been completed, stretching from Bakers Park to Beverley Way.
Although it is only 90 metres long, councillors say it will make a big difference.
Teignbridge councillor Gary Taylor (Lib Dem, Kenton and Starcross) said: “A safe, traffic-free route helps families be more active, enjoy local green spaces and choose healthier, greener ways to travel.
“It also makes it easier for people to walk, wheel or cycle to school, work and town centre services.”
Devon County Council cabinet member Jacqi Hodgson (Green, Totnes and Dartington) added: “Improving walking and cycling routes is an important part of helping people make more sustainable choices for everyday journeys.
“This new section of the Ogwell Link gives residents and visitors a safer and more enjoyable route between Ogwell and Newton Abbot, while also supporting better access to local green spaces.
“It’s good to see this project progressing through partnership working, and we will continue to look at ways to make it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle where they live.”
The new path provides an alternative to the busy Old Totnes Road and was delivered through a partnership between Devon County Council and Teignbridge District Council.
The work included the new shared-use path, drainage improvements, boundary works and landscaping.
Funding came from the Active Travel Fund, Devon County Council's Local Transport Plan grant, Homes England funding and Section 106 developer contributions managed by Teignbridge District Council.
The next phase of the Ogwell Link is expected to include a new crossing over Totnes Road and an improved link between Beverley Way and Bunting Close.
