Weather maps show a lightning storm currently sitting off the coast south of the city, skies have darkened since this morning, and the muggy air is a sign of what may be on the way.

Weather maps are showing a lightning storm moving northward through the English Channel in the direction of Plymouth.

“After another hot day, thunderstorms are expected to develop across southwestern parts of England during this afternoon and through the evening.”

The system was last tracked off the south coast of Devon and it looks like it could reach the city.

Since this morning, skies over Plymouth have clouded over significantly, though temperatures remain warm and the air feels humid.

Residents have been sharing images of the darkening skies on social media.

The Met Office has also issued a ‘Yellow warning of thunderstorm’ affecting South West England at 13:21pm.

Their warning, which affects Plymouth and Devon, read:

“After another hot day, thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of Wales as well as some western and southwestern parts of England during this afternoon and through the evening.

While many places will miss the worst conditions, where thunderstorms do occur they bring the potential for torrential downpours of rain, frequent lightning, large hail and strong, gusty winds.”
