WATCH: Aftermath of Ivybridge car fire as cause confirmed as accidental

Crews in breathing apparatus extinguished a diesel BMW fire while police and highways teams managed the scene

A car that caught fire in Ivybridge on Wednesday morning has been confirmed by the fire service as accidental, with no injuries reported.

Emergency services were called to Western Road at around 10.11am on 18 March after multiple reports of a vehicle on fire.

Fire crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.

The Moorlander contacted the service for further details following the incident, with a spokesperson confirming the vehicle involved as a diesel BMW, among other details.

“Firefighters extinguished one car on fire on Western Road in Ivybridge yesterday morning,” the spokesperson said.

“Crews wore breathing apparatus and used a hose reel jet to prevent escalation.”

Because of the fire’s proximity to a nearby care home, crews checked the building as a precaution.

“There was no fire damage to the home and all residents were safe,” the spokesperson added.

Fire crews remained at the scene until around 12.30pm, with police and highways teams also attending, however, it is not known whether the road was formally closed.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental rather than deliberate.

Devon and Somerset Fire Service advises motorists to keep vehicles properly maintained to reduce the risk of fire.

If a vehicle catches fire while driving, people are urged to pull over safely, switch off the engine, move away from the vehicle and call 999.

The incident was logged as a small fire and was later marked as closed.
