St Michael the Archangel Church in Chagford was set to celebrate VJ Day on 15th August, but obviously all such celebrations had to be cancelled.
However, their Tower Captain Jon Bint didn’t let the virus get in the way of marking the occasion and rang a full peal of the bells at 11am on that day with each bell being rung by a member of his own family.
There are eight bells in the tower and Jon has been playing the chimes from these bells throughout lockdown, which has brought so much joy and stability to the people of Chagford.
They have also successfully raised several swift chicks in bird-boxes in the church’s tower, thanks to Nick Baker and Terry Bleakman. This has been an exciting project for the church and those that followed the chicks’ progress.
There has been a screen in the church so that the public could see the nesting and breeding of the swifts in four of the boxes.
