Paignton Picture House, which has been closed for more than 25 years and is currently being restored ahead of its planned 2026 reopening, is launching a unique fund-raising project.
The cinema is inviting the people of Torbay to take part in “Stories Under the Slates.” Participants can write a message, memory, story or even draw a picture on an A3-sized roof slate, which will then be used to help restore the roof of the historic cinema.
With 2,500 tiles needing replacement above the auditorium, each slate (suggested donation £10) offers a special opportunity to leave a lasting mark on one of Torbay’s most cherished heritage buildings.

Every slate will also be photographed and included in a permanent photo book celebrating the community’s contribution.
The project takes place at The Projection Room, 11 Torbay Road, Paignton (open Fridays and Saturdays, 10am–1pm) - the temporary home of the Picture House and a volunteer-run hub for exhibitions, workshops and short film screenings.
