Thomas Hall School in Exeter has announced an ambitious new pledge to ensure every pupil takes part in 16 enriching experiences before turning 16, as part of a drive to broaden learning beyond the classroom.

The initiative, unveiled this term, commits the school to offering a diverse programme of activities including cultural trips to London, beach days, camping, live performances, professional sporting fixtures, outdoor pursuits, sustainability projects and community-focused events.

Students will also have the chance to explore more of Exeter and the wider Devon area through local excursions.

The programme will culminate in a dedicated Enrichment Week planned for the summer term, giving students time to immerse themselves in new challenges and experiences.

Based on a six-and-a-half acre site on the edge of Exeter, Thomas Hall School says the new pledge builds on a year of investment in outdoor learning.

Earlier this term the school expanded its forest school provision, giving children weekly opportunities for hands-on learning in woodland surroundings.

The school is also inviting families considering Reception places for September 2026 to a Stay & Play Open Day on Wednesday 10 December from 3:45pm to 4:30pm, where visitors can explore the grounds, meet the Early Years team and learn more about the school’s approach to learning. Places can be booked online.

Headteacher Phil Arnold said the initiative is designed to shape confident, well-rounded young people.

“At Thomas Hall, we believe great learning doesn’t just happen inside the classroom,” he said.

“Our 16 by 16 promise is much more than a list of trips and activities – it’s a pledge to give every Thomas Hall student the opportunity to push the boundaries of what they can achieve. Along the way, we’ll create some unforgettable memories together.”
