If a 7-0 walloping of Eastbourne was jolly good fun, the fightback victory over in-form Worthing was far more satisfying, important and encouraging.

The Gulls snapped out of their Eastbourne honeymoon hangover within 17 minutes, falling two goals behind to a Worthing side looking to extend their incredible winning streak to eight league games.

United then roared back to level with goals from Louis Dennis, fresh from his Eastbourne treble, and Jordan Young. Finely poised at 2-2, Dennis won it with a fine finish early in the second period, as United withstood over 12 minutes of stoppage time to secure three massive points.

A whirlwind start to the game fell in favour of the visitors, captain Joel Colbran cutting inside from the flank and curling a delicious finish beyond the outstretched arm of James Hamon.

United were suddenly under siege from the in-form Rebels, centre-back duo Sam Dreyer and Jordan Dyer both pulling off incredible blocks to keep Worthing at bay. The resistance only lasted a couple more minutes, Teddy Jenks whipping over a cross for Joe Cook to head home.

The Gulls had time for a rethink while Cook received treatment for a clash of heads in the act of scoring, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton only denied a goal back by a fine clearance off the line from Harry Ransom.

A top save by Josh Jeffires then thwarted Dan Hayfield but United were turning the screw, and reward arrived on 25 minutes, Dennis continuing his scoring streak with a terrific angled strike into the bottom corner.

The Rebels were on the run, Lo-Everton denied by another fine Jeffries’ save. Dennis then clipped a lovely chip over the visiting custodian, Colbran this time finding a heroic clearance.

An outstanding first half-hour took a further twist with the equalising goal for United, Young curling a beauty into the corner after more good play from Lo-Everton, a player arguably enjoying his finest spell in Yellow.

A breathless game saw Worthing respond with a decent spell of pressure, Hamon digging out a top save to ensure parity at the half-time break.

The second half had no chance of matching the action of the first, but drama remained aplenty. Young went close with another super curling effort from distance before Dennis stepped forward with a delightful winner, caressing the ball past Jeffries after good play from Matt Jay and Young.

Clear-cut chances dried up, much to United’s contentment, before a frantic finale that saw 12 minutes of stoppage time played. Worthing won a last-gasp free-kick, Jeffries went forward and almost pinched a dramatic winner but Hamon pulled out one more match-winning moment for the jubilant Gulls.
