Stuart Brocklehurst, the University of Exeter’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Business Engagement and Innovation, has been named a Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, supporting the Lord Lieutenant in representing The King across the county.
Mr Brocklehurst, who has lived in Devon since 2001, previously ran his own business, Applegate, with offices in Barnstaple and Plymouth. The company, which built AI systems for procurement, was sold in 2022.
He has also held a range of roles in local business and civic organisations, including chairing the Devon, Plymouth and Torbay Education Alliance and serving as Vice Chair of the Great South West Pan Regional Partnership.
Deputy Lieutenants support the Lord Lieutenant by attending civic events, recognising local organisations, and supporting charities and community initiatives. The role is unpaid, with no fixed time commitment, and appointees cover their own expenses.

Commenting on his appointment, Stuart Brocklehurst said, “It’s an absolute honour to be appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, supporting HM Lord-Lieutenant in his role as The King’s personal representative.”
“Since I moved to Devon in 2001, I’ve built a great affection for this peerlessly beautiful, creative, engaging and storied place.”
“I’m delighted to take on this role and the opportunity it provides to celebrate many of the brilliant things which happen here and those who make them happen.”
He confirmed the role is unpaid and covers all expenses personally, with no fixed time commitment.
Duties include attending public events to celebrate charities, businesses, and local organisations, as well as working with the Lieutenancy team to recognise and thank notable contributors across Devon.
Mr Brocklehurst has a strong track record in both business and civic leadership. He has held senior roles in regional partnerships, education initiatives, and innovation networks across Devon and the South West. His experience spans running his own tech company, advising investment funds, and supporting collaboration between universities and industry.
At the University of Exeter, he was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Business Engagement in 2023, a role focused on strengthening links between academic teams and industry partners. He has also held honorary roles at the University’s Business School.
Beyond the University, he has contributed to regional development and skills initiatives, working with organisations such as the Devon, Plymouth and Torbay Education Alliance, the Great South West Pan Regional Partnership, and advisory boards supporting science, technology, and business innovation.
Previously, he was a member of the Exeter Diocesan Synod and Bishop’s Council, director of the Heart of the South West LEP, a governor of Petroc, and a Leadership Fellow of Exeter Business School.
