Christmas hampers - Credit: SSAFA
Exeter and the wider Devon community have once again come together to support veterans and their families this Christmas, as SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, marked the 17th year of its annual Christmas hamper delivery.
This year, 100 hampers were distributed across Devon, offering practical support and festive cheer to local veterans.
Each hamper contains a selection of locally sourced products, including festive treats, pantry staples, fresh produce, and seasonal essentials, ensuring recipients have both practical support and a taste of Christmas.
A presentation event was held on 9 December 2025 at the Gordon Messenger Centre in Lympstone, where 11 veterans’ charities received their SSAFA hampers.
Terry Cuthbertson, Branch Treasurer for SSAFA Devon, described the scheme as “more than a hamper, it’s hope in a season of struggle.”
He added that the project, sponsored by an anonymous donor and Honiton-based charity The Bastion Baton, is supported by local suppliers such as Greendale Farm Shop, ensuring the hampers are “made by locals, for locals.”

The hampers are delivered in partnership with charities including The Army Benevolent Fund, Aggies, local Military Wives Choirs, and the Okehampton Veterans’ Breakfast Club, along with SSAFA caseworkers.
Since the scheme began in 2009, it has supported more than 5,000 veterans and service families, providing over £125,000 worth of aid.
In addition to the hampers, SSAFA volunteers Terry and Barbara Cuthbertson also coordinate £2,000 in store gift cards, offering further financial assistance during the holiday period.
Local veteran and Exeter resident, Alan Spencer, who received a hamper last year, said: “It really makes a difference.”
“Christmas can be a difficult time, and knowing the community hasn’t forgotten us lifts your spirits. The hamper isn’t just food, it’s a reminder that someone cares.”
Mark Tyrrell‑Smith, SSAFA Regional Chair for the South West and Devon Branch Chair, said: “This kind of local support for our veterans is what SSAFA is all about, and we are so grateful for our amazing volunteers for making this happen every year.”
SSAFA has supported the Armed Forces community since 1885, providing welfare and wellbeing assistance tailored to the unique demands of service life.
Last year, SSAFA helped nearly 55,000 people, including veterans, serving personnel, and their families.
For those wishing to volunteer, fundraise, or access support, SSAFA encourages people to visit their website and search for “SSAFA near me.”
