Illicit drug cases lead to North Devon hospital admissions

Devon and Cornwall Police say they have been made aware of several reports of people becoming ill after consuming illicit drugs in North Devon.

The force confirmed that two people were admitted to hospital in Barnstaple in recent days. While police figures account for two admissions in the town, it is understood by the Gazette that there have been a total of three admissions to North Devon District Hospital linked to the reports.

Both of the individuals in the Barnstaple cases have since made a full recovery and been discharged. A further, separate case occurred in Ilfracombe, which police say is unrelated to the incident in Barnstaple.

Sector Inspector Andy Wills said the local Drugs Liaison Officer has been in dialogue with health partners and the individuals involved to "understand the incidents in question" and "evaluate any particularly increased risk arising from the local drug supply market at present."

“Our advice would be for everyone to refrain from consuming illicit substances, the supply of which takes place in an unregulated market which is devoid of quality control, making such activity fraught with danger, as is highlighted by these cases," he said. 

The police are signposting regular drug users to local treatment services for support and advice.

Authorities reminded the public that anyone in the company of someone suffering a medical episode should contact 999 immediately for medical help.
